So it seems this virus has forced a lot of people into a nook for some time. Who knows when things will be back to “complete” normal; whatever THAT is?
Here’s what I know.
I’ve met very talented people over the last 20 years who have their own special SUPER POWERS. Not just the athletes who excel on the world stage in a sport. I’m talking people who can sing, write, calculate, code and decode!
A young lady came up to me a few years back and told me she wanted to be journalist and based on her personality and some of the OTHER “journalism” I had read up to that point, it seemed like a NO-BRAINER!
What I didn’t realize is that, even though I had been burning the midnight oil, burning the candle on both ends AND moonlighting as a website developing noob, she didn’t know how simple it would be to just set up a simple blog and grow it. She already had a key piece of the puzzle solved; the ability to create content!
Look! Everybody is better at something than somebody else. MY KIDS can run circles around me on social media. I see people out there with followings on Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok and everything else that I envy a little bit. Why? They make it look so easy to crank out content.
If I had the time right then, I would have loved breaking down the steps she could take to get her site up and running. The situation didn’t allow it because it was a pretty busy night and I was working. Sometimes I think about her every once in a while today and I wish I could go back and do a little differently.
See, growing up, people thought I was smart. Why? Because I took some hard classes and did okay in them in high school and college. What they didn’t know is that, when they might have to read something twice and get it, I might have to read it 9 times to even make it make sense. Then I’d have to look up words to figure out what that part was saying about another part.
But don’t cry for me! It’s MY process. I needed to do it like that so I could UNDERSTAND. How did I get like that? Well, by the time I reached middle school, my parents couldn’t help me as much with my homework. If I asked a question, the answer was “look it up” in the dictionary or encyclopedia (which, back then, it meant that I had to go to the library).
I didn’t know it, but what I was learning was being patient with how NOT smart I was…so much so, that I had to learn it MY LONG WAY to understand it. I didn’t know it, but later I would have to learn how to work and learn book stuff with other people in high school and college to complete certain projects.
I’m telling you this to bring home the point that if MY learning disabilitied, yet, HIGHLY PATIENT ASS can learn this, you can too.
